Wind/brass instruments it often means that you don’t tongue between notes. In bowed strings, like violin, it typically means to keep the bow going in the same direction. On piano, do not lift the finger of the first note until you go to play the 2nd note. How this is done depends on your instrument. Slurs mean to play the notes legato, or to put it into English – play the notes smoothly, connected or without any silence between the notes. Phrase – a musical idea, often indicated with a slur line over/under many notes or more often, many measures. Tie – curved line connecting the *same* note(s) immediately next to one another. Slurs – curved line over/under two or more *different* notes. As a long time piano teacher, I find many students, even advanced players get confused. To fix this type of issue, try limiting you arc and beginning/ending the line next to the notehead versus above or below.Let’s talk about slurs, phrases and ties. If the line begins and ends above or below a notehead, it is a slur. If the line begins and ends next to a notehead, it is a tie. You can tell by seeing where the beginning and ending of the line is in relation to the notehead. In this example the D in the treble clef is tied, but the other lines are slurs. Troubleshooting: When attempting to tie a chord, you may see a result that looks like this. This is way to quickly instruct StaffPad to tie all of the notes in the chord as seen in this example: In some situations, like having a second interval in a chord, you might find it easier to tie all the notes in the chord by writing the tie lines all next to each other as if you were tying the same note but with multiple lines. To tie a single note that is part of a chord, draw a line from one notehead to the other without much arc like this.Ĭontinuing in this manner with very small arcs, you can tie other notes too if you wish to tie the entire chord. Tying chords: Tying chords can require a bit more finesse than tying a single note. See Selecting items for more on adjusting slurs once they’ve been recognized. StaffPad will snap the slur to the beginning and end notes according to customary engraving rules. Slurs: Draw an arc above or below two or more notes of different pitch. Ties: Draw an arc between two notes of the same pitch.
